To be honest I hadn’t the faintest clue of exactly what sociology was to begin with when I registered up for the Education 4320 foundations elective. I do know however that it did sound more interesting than the other options available this semester. We have not spent much time in class yet but discussions so far have been intriguing and engaging. I look forward to the course that follows.
I will not attempt to simply summarize the readings of the textbook, but will write about topics that I found interesting during the reading. This inevitably proves I did at least some of the readings, and also allows me to keep my blog content focused on topics I find interesting.
Having no previous experience in Sociology I found the first part of chapter one of Sociology of Education, ( J. Barakett., A. Cleghorn.) to be an eye opener. I have never really thought about how I have become a product of society and my surroundings. Over the years I have been molded by my experiences which have ‘socialized’ me over time. Whether that socialization was intended or unintended, it has happened and will happen to everybody in a very different way. This process ultimately helps shape the people we grow up to be.
As a young person, I have been taught that I could achieve great things and overcome obstacles to accomplish anything I wanted. As an aspiring teacher I hope that this is true, because I want to affect children’s lives positively and encourage them to follow their dreams. Sadly after reading the first eight pages of the text, the reality is much different. The life an adult will lead is directly proportional to their upbringing and events of their youth. Although it is explained that exceptions do occur, they are a rarity.
At this point in my career I am far too optimistic to believe that students have restricted opportunities because of a rough childhood. I do believe we are a product of our surroundings, but someone who really wants a change can make it happen and overcome those obstacles.
